  Main Points

  • Open Communion.
The Lord’s Supper or communion is celebrated in weekly worship. On the basis of Jesus’ example and explicit invitation, all who believe in Christ as well as all who are simply hungry to have a direct relationship with God are invited to join in communion.

  • Freedom of Belief.
Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are not only free, but are expected to follow their consciences in clarifying their theological and ethical beliefs.  In doing this we can be confident of the guidance and support we can receive from the Holy Spirit, the Bible, the traditional teachings of the church, from study and prayer and from the feedback we get from other Christians. Disciples are expected to exercise such freedom for themselves and extend it to all.

  • Baptism by Immersion.
In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust
    in God begins.

  • The Ministry of Believers.
Men, women and children along with our ordained ministers lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.

  • Women as ordained clergy.
Disciples believe all persons play a major roll in spiritual leadership.

Find out how to join Shawnee Park Christian Church.

Shawnee Park Christian Church is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a denomination of more than 4,000 congregations.

As a part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Shawnee Park believes "the Church of Jesus Christ on earth is essentially, intentionally, and constitutionally one" and that "we are not the only Christians, just Christians only."

We welcome every Sunday and at other times to the communion table everyone who believes Jesus Christ is Lord. We also believe that no one need be re-baptized if they were previously baptized, whether by sprinkling or immersion, in a former church. As an affiliate congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Shawnee Park practices baptism by immersion for those who come to the church by confession of faith. Shawnee Park also baptizes only those persons of sufficient age (usually at least 10 to 12 years old) to make a decision for Jesus Christ for themselves.

Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.

All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service. Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.
